Making Your Own Pizza Sauce
By Xanthe Yates
One day, pizza dough was on sale at my local grocery store. I bought it with the other ingredients that I needed to make pizza and it came out fairly good. The pizza sauce that I had bought was not bad, but I wanted to see if there were any pizza sauce recipes online. Looking through various recipes, I decided to try http://allrecipes.com/recipe/easy-pizza-sauce-iii/ (Easy Pizza Sauce III) from allrecipes.com. I've used recipes from allrecipes.com and the recipes that I did try came out pretty good. The following is the list of ingredients used in Easy Pizza Sauce III.
Ingredients
- 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
- 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon ground oregano
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried minced garlic
- 1 teaspoon ground paprika
Directions
In a medium bowl, Mix together tomato sauce and tomato paste until smooth. Stir in oregano, garlic and paprika.
When I looked at the recipe, I first thought, "Was it really that easy to make your own pizza sauce?" The ingredients were fairly simple and easy to get. I tried this out and it actually came out pretty good.
I make pizza on a fairly regular basis. I decided to try different approaches in coming up with a pizza sauce.
One experiment I tried was just trying to use tomato sauce straight from the can and see how that worked as a pizza sauce. I learned that using just tomato sauce was not very useful. It just added a really thin layer of sauce that I couldn't taste when I cooked up the pizza. All I could taste was the cooked dough, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni.
My next experiment was just trying to mix the tomato sauce and tomato paste together, I found that combination worked fairly well. I spread a thin layer of this sauce on the pizza dough. I cooked the pizza and even without adding any spices to the sauce, the pizza still tasted fine.
So, the most basic, easiest pizza sauce that I came up with starting with the Easy Pizza Sauce III recipe was just one 15 oz can of tomato sauce mixed with one 6 ounce can of tomato paste. Using that as a base, one can easily personalize and create whatever pizza sauce you want.
The only other comment that I have for the Easy Pizza Sauce III recipe is that I like more garlic than what is called for in the recipe, so I usually put 2 teaspoons of garlic in rather than the one and a half teaspoons of garlic.
